Wherever the note head land,s is the note name. It doesn’t matter what the stem (lines) are, and it doesn’t matter if the note head is empty (as with half and whole notes) or full (quarter notes and smaller). These note heads tell the musician what letter name the note is. You’ll notice each note has a note head or circle on the staff (those five lines).
